General recall

Cue your pup using their name and “Come/Here”. When they arrive, give them a high value treat and plenty of praise and let them go again. Repeat many, many, many times throughout the day (in the house and garden and park etc). Try to only use this cue when you think they will be successful and only use the cue once.

Successful recall

Use these tips to make sure your recall is always successful (never give up on a recall!):

    1. 1) Run a few steps away so that your pup chases you.
    1. 2) Little bird – call your pup then hold the treat in your hand as if there is something exciting in there for them to come and look at – they will now become very interested in what you have and come across to see.
    1. 3) Call your dog then add an unexpected high-pitched noise, such as “yippee!” as you run a few steps back – irresistible to an interested pup
    1. 4) Reduce the distance between you and your pup so that it is easier for them to come back to you.

Use these strategies to increase the motivation for your dog to come to you – which will ensure that every recall is successful and can be rewarded and the cue strengthened.
