Reducing over excitement when you leave for a walk
- Pick up your pup’s lead, then just put it back down again.
- Put on your boots and coat, then just wear them around the house for a while.
- Sprinkle some treats on the ground, put on your pup’s harness, then just take it off.
- Put the harness and lead on, then give them some enrichment, before taking the harness and lead off again.
- Throughout the day, pick one of these activities at random to do with your pup. Repeat multiple times a day.
We are reducing the association (and thus overexcitement) that your dog feels when they see the “leaving cues” prior to a walk. When you do go for a walk, put on their harness at least an hour before to allow their adrenaline levels to reduce before you set off.
