Getting puppy used to being alone

1. Train your dog to fall asleep in their crate by putting them in there when they are tired and sitting with them, next to the crate, until they fall asleep. Let them out of the crate whenever they wake up.

2. Get them used to falling asleep in the crate even when you aren’t right next to the crate. Put them into the crate and then quietly walk out of sight while they fall asleep. They may give a couple of whines or barks but shouldn’t be left distressed. If they are distressed, then do more repeats of step 1 prior to starting step 2.
3. Get them used to falling asleep in the crate even when you leave the house. As before, pop them in their crate when they are tired but now leave the house when they are settling down to sleep. Keep an eye on them on your puppy cam to check that they have fallen asleep. Stay out of the house for around twenty minutes (as long as they stay happily asleep for this length of time) then just come back in and let them out. If they stir before you are ready to come back in, just give them a moment to see if they resettle and go back to sleep themselves. However, if they get upset then do go back in and let them out.
4. Repeat daily, varying the amount of time that you are out and gradually increasing the time that your pup is in their crate. If they get upset when you are out during any of these repeats, reduce the time that you are away the next day before starting to slowly build up again.
